Just for Fun

Filed under: comparisons, curiosities, Non Birds — richditch @ 9:50 am

Regular readers of this blog know I “collect” birding related vanity plates with my camera every chance I can, having now built a sizable collection that started in NJ in the mid 70’s. I  now have over 240 of them posted on my web site – these include many that have now been donated by friends around the country.

I’ve also been intrigued by photo mosaics – images composed of assemblages of other images. So when the iTunes store offered free downloads of an application called PhotoMosaica I couldn’t resist. I decided to try it out with a shot of my own vanity plate:

AZ Vanity Plate

The free version of the app that I have uses all the photos stored on the device and quickly generated an 800 pixel wide image. I was able to save the image by mailing it to myself.  Upgrading for $.99 unlocks useful features including directly saving a “poster sized” version of of created mosaic and the ability to select which photos are used to build the composite. I had assumed that the image would be built using only the other vanity plate shots in the folder containing my SHRIKE plate, but the app used all the folders I have on the iPhone including those on the “camera roll” taken with the built-in camera. So a caution: make sure there are no sensitive images (I’m sure you know what I mean) on your phone before using this. Looking at my test I see photos of other vanity plates, lots of birds, a sunflower, a political cartoon, and even a bar code from a store coupon.

So, have some free (or cheap) fun with your photos and this app, but be careful to avoid embarrassment.

  3. How cool! Love your version. I’ll have to try that some time.
