Green Heron at Water’s Edge

Green Heron

Green Heron was a common species when I lived in New Jersey, but I don’t think I’ve got a single quality image of one from all the days I was a bird photographer there. With a lot less water here in Arizona it would be reasonable to expect fewer encounters with them here compared to NJ, but you couldn’t tell that from my field notes or my photo files. That is probably the result of how much time I spend at the Gilbert Water Ranch where I took this in late afternoon on January 3, 2011.

The Water Ranch provides ideal habitat for Green Herons, with heavy brush around the perimeter of all the ponds that provides good places for these small herons to wait patiently for fish and frogs and dragonflies that they prey upon.

Most of the time I find my photo opportunities for Green Heron when they roost in a higher location, or at a nest tucked away in a dense waterside thicket. So I was happy with this opportunity to photograph one from across a narrow part of the pond and get a water level view of it.

There’s often a Green Heron at this spot, but it rarely stays around or moves this close when I’m sitting quietly at water’s edge.

  1. In my recent visit to the Water Ranch I was surprised to find 8 or 9 Green Herons there. A few years ago when I was there I would usually see just one. I had a great couple of hours at the Gilbert Water Ranch. I saw the Ruddy and Common Ground-Doves too. The Ruddy was a lifer.

  2. Great low angle, light and comp Rich. Beautiful pose, eye contact and rich natural colors.

  3. Sorry that I couldn’t be there when you visited. I wondered how you had made out.
