Great Blue Heron on a cold morning

Great Blue Heron

Great Blue Heron

We had a week or so of uncommonly cold weather here in central AZ at the start of the month – so cold that the local TV stations kept warning about the need to protect outside pipes and cover outdoor plants to prevent damage from temps that dropped below freezing three nights in a row. Even with our plants covered we again had some losses.

But it was a good time for me to make an early morning visit to the Gilbert Water Ranch, where I found the usual photographers had stayed inside and I had the place to myself for a few hours.

My favorite bird of the morning was this Great Blue Heron standing out in pond 5 with the morning sun reflecting off the vegetation on the far side and giving the water surface this veery nice golden color. The heron stayed put while I stood on the edge and took a lot of shots. I played around with composition and hoped the heron would give me a nice profile, but it never turned its head any farther than seen here.

The vertical frames I took (to enhance the height and reflection) showed too much empty space on top and bottom for me, and I ended up cropping more from that dimension.

I especially like the frost or ice visible on the back of the heron – something I don’t get to see very often in “hot” Arizona.

  1. Rich- If you hadn’t given your location the background reflection could pass for late fall in the Northeast.

  2. hmm, freezing temps in Phoenix, that must have been about the time we had a reported low of -26 up here! (Only minus three at my house though, abut 25 miles from the reporting station.)

Rich, I prefer the comp of the vertical (esp. in the context of my comment on NPN).
