It’s not a purse, it’s a camera bag!

Well, actually it is a purse. But it makes a pretty good bag for loose camera gear on my photographic walkabouts at places like the Gilbert Water Ranch.

For a long time I’ve been using a traditional fanny pack to carry the odds and ends I sometimes find useful when I’m out with the 300/2.8 and 2x o n my D200: my SB-800 flash, my TC14E 1.4x converter, an extra set of AA batteries for the SB-800, a spare battery for the D200, a few compact flash memory cards, and a micro fiber lens cleaning cloth. But carrying this much weight in a fanny pack has always aggravated my arthritis and made my hips and legs hurt after a couple hours of walking about. I find it a lot better on my joints if I carry stuff in a backpack, but that doesn’t give me quick access to my stuff.

I thought about the old blue and white canvas bag labeled Nikon that I’d been given as a promo 30 years ago and how something similar would work for my current needs. I decided to look around for something a that would serve my purpose. I found it in the local Goodwill store and was happy to buy it for $2 even though it was rather dirty.

It washed up just fine and I’ve even taken it out in public now a few times. I’ve now got plenty of room for the odd bits (it even swallowed a light windbreaker yesterday when my buddy Brendon got this shot of me modeling it with his iPhone). My joints feel a lot better. And so far nobody has questioned my manhood about it.

  1. Rich,

That bag sure looks like it will work wonderfully for what you wanted it for and… it goes very nicely with your hat. Thanks to Brendon for taking the picture.
