Ernie "hides"

Ernie "hides"

Just a quick grab shot from earlier in the month, when I noticed Ernie (one of our two indoor-only cats) in a playful mood. He decided he could hide under this afghan hanging from the arm of a chair: I’m sure everyone who lives with cats recognizes this behavior when a cat thinks it is hidden as long as its head is covered.

Luckily I had my Nikon D200 handy with the modest 55-200 “plastic” zoom mounted, instead of the normally mounted 300/2.8 and TC20E. So I got down on the floor with the camera and focused on Ernie. This was at 80mm, ISO 400, f/5.6 and 1/20th second without flash. The camera was handheld but braced as best I could manage and surprisingly sharp at that slow shutter speed. This is the uncropped full frame image.

  1. What a beautiful cat Rich and very well done for 1/20 handheld. I recognize the behavior when I had cats they thought they were hidden of they couldn’t see me through whatever they were hiding behind. Ernie’s eye color is gorgeous.

  2. Why is Ernie looking at you so suspiciously Rich? Does he know something about you that we don’t? Love the afghan over his head.
