Black Phoebe juvenile

Yes, its been a while since I posted on this blog. But the summer weather continues in Phoenix which limits bird activity and limits my outside activity.

At least this past Sunday (08/01/2010) started with lower temps and some cloud cover as we flirted with our monsoon rains, and I was able to spend a couple hours out at the Gilbert Water Ranch. I’m happy to note that I still remembered how to find my way around the GWR and how to work my camera gear.

I’d set up on the ground beside my favorite pond when I’d noticed a juvenile Pied-billed Grebe. While I sat there low and quiet I was visited by this young Black Phoebe that landed close enough on the dried mud surface for a few frames. The pale gape at the base of the bill indicates that this is a very young bird.

I like seeing this bird on the ground, rather than on a high branch asa is usual with the species. The overcast conditions kept the contrast of the light down and helped in showing the black plumage without blocking up.

Nikon D200, 300/2.8 AF-S plus TC20E (2x), ISO 400, 1/250th second at f/5.6.
