Anna's Hummingbird

Anna's Hummingbird

Sorry for the lack of activity here lately – I’ve had a few too many other things requiring attention.

Here’s a companion image to the side-on view of this Anna’s Hummingbird from the Gilbert Water Ranch that I posted a couple weeks ago. This shot was taken just a few seconds after the other image, but the turn of the head into the light from the rising sun has made a tremendous difference in the look of the image.

The bright colors on a hummingbird’s gorget usually look dull (almost black) a lot of the time. But when the light hits it from just the right angle the colors blaze out. I have seen some photographers claim that you can only get good color in a photo by using flash, but that isn’t true. It just takes careful positioning of the camera and a little luck and patience to get proper alignment.

Nikon D200, 300/2.8 plus TC20E (2x), ISO 800, 1/80th second @ f/8, spot metered.

  1. I saw a link to your site by another birder, and I have to say, this is a stunningly beautiful photo. Now I’ll probably spend all night looking at your birds. (The White Kite… oh, gorgeous!)

    Thank you 🙂

  2. Fabulous as always. Everything is a question of light, no doubt about it.

  3. Wow. Just… Wow. Further articulation neither necessary, or even possible. Amazing image!
