Orange-crowned Warbler

Taken on the same gloomy day as my recently posted kinglet shot, this Orange-crowned Warbler at the Gilbert Water Ranch may not be to everyone’s compositional tastes. Lots of people like very tight compositions, or at least the subject on a single color smooth background. Although I take some shots in that style I’m more comfortable and usually more happy when I keep the subject smaller in the frame and include the habitat as here.

What motivated me most in this situation was the color scheme, with a yellow-green bird on a yellow and green background. Not the image “pop” that a lot of photographers strive for, but more of a quiet contemplative image in my opinion.

I also like to include strong graphic elements whenever possible, and I feel the reddish-brown branch of the mesquite provides such an element.

  1. I very much like this composition. The richness of the background and foreground branches provide interest and framing for the bird. Yet there is very little clutter behind the bird to distract the eye.

My favorite bird photos are by a Japanese photographer who included a large, narrow “canvas” with each bird to provide a very traditional look. I just wish I could find that link now.

  2. My wife considers this to be one of my “oriental” images so I’m happy to read your comment. Please post the link if you ever come upon it again as we’d be interested in seeing those photos.
