Consolation prize

Song Sparrow

In spite of the summer heat I made trips to the Gilbert Water Ranch on two consecutive days. The big news on the listserv Saturday night was of a Purple Gallinule seen late in the day at the Ranch, so I joined a handful of hardcore birders at dawn on Sunday hoping to see it. We stood in one spot for about two hours, getting our shoes covered with mud from the soggy ground caused by some recent serious rain. As with many of these chases the gallinule didn’t show while we were there.

I have little patience for these stand-in-one-place rituals, and since my AZ state list is quite solid I seldom have much “list pressure” to do this sort of thing. Two hours was my limit on Sunday, what with the heat and the mud and the uncooperative bird. I was glad to get home and get a shower.

Of course, the gallinule appeared a few hours after we departed. And came out again late in the day. So those of us who missed it on Sunday were back on Monday afternoon to try again.

Anyway, my consolation prize for the muddy wait was this Song Sparrow, who came out and fed briefly nearby. Taken with Nikon D200, 300/2.8 and 2x, ISO 500, 1/160th second at f/5.6, 73% of full frame.

  1. And a nice consolation prize it is Rich.

I hope you had more success with the gallinule on Monday.
