The most exciting local bird this weekend has ben an adult Little Blue Heron discovered on Friday 5/15/09 at the Gilbert Water Ranch. Brendon Grice, who found it, alerted me from his cell phone at the time but I was too tired to chase it at the time. Lucky for me (and others) it was still present on the morning of 5/16/09.

Little Blue Heron is a vagrant in any part of AZ, and this is only the third I’ve seen here since moving to AZ in 1994. It was not the best ti me or place for photos of it when I got there around 6:30 AM: the sun was already too high and the heron kept out in the middle of the processed waste water pond. But it was nice having the opportunity to photograph this species here that I mostly took for granted when I lived in New Jersey where it bred.

This seems like a good opportunity to post another AZ vagrant, an immature Reddish Egret, since it looks a lot like an adult Little Blue Heron. This egret was discovered at a community park in Chandler, AZ, in late December of 2008, and stayed in the area for a few weeks.
