Black-chinned Hummingbird with pollen on bill

Just a few days after posting a Costa’s Hummingbird with a bill coated with pollen I managed to get a shot of a Black-chinned Hummingbird with a dirty bill of his own, so I thought I’d share it.

Unlike Costa’s and Anna’s we only get to see Black-chinned here in spring and summer. They showed up in small numbers about three weeks ago at the Water Ranch in Gilbert, AZ, where this was taken. And as in previous years, they’ve started pushing out the Anna’s, although right now you can still see both on any walkabout at the reserve.

I find them a lot more difficult to photograph. For one thing, they are much more spooky and don’t like to pose or even be observed very closely. For another, they only have color on the gorget as a thin band of purple which is very hard to capture in a photo.

I feel lucky in finding this bird who allowed a few frames and gave a couple of interesting poses before buzzing off to another perch, but it still required a substantial crop to come up with a composition I like.

Nikon D200, 300/2.8 and 2x, ISO 200, 1/500th at f/5.6, no flash, 4/02/09.
