Ducks on water present a compositional challenge for me, since my favorite style is to show my subject a bit smaller than many people would so that I can include suitable habitat in the image. Since most ducks are photographed on the water my style would lead to a lot of empty water and a subject that just looked too small for the frame. Sometimes I can still compose that way if the duck is a puddle duck that likes to hand out near pons side vegetation, but usually I end up working with birds that don’t do that.

So, I bite the bullet and go for a much tighter composition than I normally would as with this Ruddy Duck at the Water Ranch in Gilbert, AZ.

D200, 300/2.8 and 2x, ISO 200, 1/640th @ f/8, Nov 8, 2007.
